The name chiaroscuro means literally ‘light’ and ‘shade’. During this two day course you will learn about the history of this technique, design your own image and make a 3 colour tonal reduction woodcut print. This course is suitable for beginners and those with some printmaking experience. There is a maximum of eight students per course guided by one to one tutoring from experienced printmaker Carol Wilhide-Justin who is a graduate of the RCA. After completing the course you can join our print studio's Open Access which runs on Wednesday evenings and Saturday during the day, giving you the opportunity to further develop your printmaking skills.MORE INFO

The prints are handprinted using a baren, no presses are necessary making this a process that can be done at home. The workshop explores the history of the traditional Japanese prints as exemplified by Hokusai and Hiroshige and follows the teaching that the tutor Carol Wilhide Justin herself received from Japanese sensei on her residency in Japan.MORE INFO

You will develop two print editions in one weekend. Working in both relief and intaglio, you will create a series of multicoloured reduction relief prints on linoleum with Japanese woodcut tools and a second series of hard ground black and white line etchings on zinc using a saline sulphate mordant. There is a maximum of ten students per course guided by one to one tutoring from experienced printmaker Carol Wilhide-Justin. The Printmaking Taster Weekend can be followed up by evening or weekend courses specialising in either relief or etching.
