In the second part of the course students will work on a personal creative project. Students will be guided step by step through the process of developing an idea, collecting source material and references, experimenting with different techniques and approaches, before the final execution. Mokulito Wood Lithography with Kate Desforges
Course Code: WC2003PR88 Tutor: Kate Desforges Course Dates: Saturday & Sunday, 24th & 25th April 2021 Days: 2 Times: 10.00am – 4.00pm Experience Level: All Levels Fee: £195 Location: Art Academy London, 165A Mermaid Court, SE1 1HR £195.00Plywood lithography takes the basic principles of lithography and applies them to a prepared plywood surface. Traditional lithographic drawing materials are used to draw and paint onto the plywood surface. The drawing is then processed using gum arabic, and the block is inked up and printed using the etching press. Because of the coarser nature of wood in comparison to stone or metal plate, fine detail cannot always be retained, so this process would suit those who have a more experimental approach to image-making, embracing and working with the natural properties of the wood.
This course will explore the creative possibilities of this unique printmaking process. The grain of the wood will often show up in the background of prints, and becomes stronger with each subsequent print – ‘filling in’ until white becomes black and the block is no longer useable.Kate will guide you through this fascinating technique with a hands-on, experimental approach, providing examples, instruction and advice throughout. The aim of the course is to gain a good understanding of the process and to create a small run of prints from your own plywood block, and to give you the confidence to carry on using the technique in your own practice. This course would suit those with a little previous experience of lithography, relief printing or intaglio, however this is not essential and beginners are also welcome. -

Painting – Developing Your Style
Course Code: SAT2003019 Tutor: Eigil Nordstrøm Course Dates: Saturdays, 17th April - 19th June 2021 Days: 10 Times: 2.00pm – 4.30pm Experience Level: Intermediate Fee: £310 Location: Art Academy London, 165A Mermaid Court, SE1 1HR From: £310.00This course focuses on developing each student’s style of painting, both through pushing creative expression and refining technical ability. By working from the model, and by developing with a creative project, students will explore multiple ways of using paint to convey a certain message or feeling.
In the first part of the course students will be working from the figure, developing core painting skills whilst also reflecting on their use of paint. Working with oil and/or acrylic paints students will develop a series of artworks, from quick sketches to longer more developed pieces. Focus will be on developing expressive paintings that through their specific use of colour, composition and brushwork, have something to say about the human figure. This will be informed by looking at different ways other artists have used paint to achieve a certain result.
In the second part of the course students will work on a personal creative project. Students will be guided step by step through the process of developing an idea, collecting source material and references, experimenting with different techniques and approaches, before the final execution. By looking at contemporary and historical artists, and through dialogue with the group, students will develop their creative and critical awareness. This course would be a great follow on from the Intermediate Painting or Figure and Portrait Painting.
