The Art Academy is a vibrant artistic community of artists working together to improve and refine their skills. We try to provide a platform for a rich social life as well as an environment for an exchange of ideas.
When you join us as a student we want you to be part of the social and artistic life of our college. Our induction process not only introduces you to the way we work and the standards we expect but also shows you how to enjoy life in Southwark, which could well be called the cultural and gastronomic core of London!
We are a small enough organisation to feel like a large sprawling multi-national family that is bound together by inspiration and friendship which spans the wide range of courses that we run. We encourage cross college artistic and social events as part of Freshers’ activities in order to welcome new students into the Art Academy community.
The Academic Team and Student Council also organise other events throughout the year to maintain and develop our students’ sense of belonging to the artistic community. Whether you are talking to a tutor, an administrator, a technician or our marketing team, what you will quickly discover is that we all share the same special world – the world of being a creative artist.
The Art Academy is run across two sites. Our base in Mermaid Court, off Borough High Street, and our exciting new site in the old Newington Library at Elephant and Castle. We have 7 full-time teaching studios and several project and working spaces. We have 3 ceramic kilns, a specialist glass kiln and a partnership with the London Metal workshop who allow us access to their studios for specialist workshops.
The Art Academy feels like an art school, there is no white cube to work from. The studios are in constant working use and as such, you need to expect to get your hands – and probably your clothes – dirty! Yes, there are layers of paint on the floor and nobody minds.
