Art History – A Century of Change; Trends in French and British Art in the 19th Century
Course Code: OC2002AH01 Tutor: Daniel Greaney Course Dates: Mondays, 25th January - 22nd February 2021 Days: 5 Times: 6.15pm – 7.45pm Experience Level: All Levels Fee: £95 Location: Online £95.00The nineteenth century in France and Britain witnessed sweeping changes; socially, politically and culturally. For some artists, these developments were an opportunity to depict new subjects. This is evidenced in the work of Édouard Manet and the Impressionists who captured the changing face of Paris and its inhabitants. In Victorian Britain by contrast, the rise of industry led many to fear that the country was losing its traditional appearance. The art of the Pre-Raphaelites and their followers looked back to England’s mythical past; a place of Arthurian legends, medieval literature and bucolic scenes of nature.
This course examines the major trends in art on both sides of the Channel during the 1800s. We will explore the techniques and subjects found in radical styles including Realism, the Gothic Revival, Post-Impressionism and Aestheticism and compare these against the prevailing Academic conventions found at the Royal Academy in London and the Paris Salon
