Art Therapy, the Creative Process and the Unconscious

The course will also introduce the professional context in which Art Psychotherapy is practiced within different clinical settings by using clinical case studies, presentations and group discussions. The program will also offer an overview of Art Psychotherapy training and career pathways currently available in the UK.
This course offers an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of Art Psychotherapy with experiential and creative workshops with particular emphasis on the central role of the images and art making as a holder of client’s emotional experience and as form of non-verbal and unconscious communication between client and therapist.
Using a wide range of art materials, the facilitator will support participants with integrating a creative aspect to theories learnt on the course. No previous experience of art making is required but the workshops will include group discussions and reflective conversations. Therefore, it is important to be prepared to contribute while taking part in these workshops.

Working mainly from models, students will explore portrait through a practical and structured approach. Measurement and anatomy will be complemented with more experimental ways of working, critical analysis and group discussion, all with the aim of instilling the confidence needed to marry physical likeness with personal artistic expression.
A vibrant and supportive studio environment will be created by your tutor who will encourage you to explore and push yourself through both the discipline and subject. This course will improve traditional portrait drawing skills as well as push contemporary portrait drawing understanding. We recommend completing a beginners drawing course or having basic drawing skills before signing up for this course.

Students should feel free to use whichever materials they enjoy the most, whether that is drawing in charcoal or ink or painting in oils or acrylics. The course is suitable for all skill levels and is designed to enable students to express a creative response to either museum artworks, or outdoor environment. The tutor will meet each student at their unique individual level.
The course locations may vary nearer the time in response to the current situation. We will draw in indoor locations such as cafes and undercover markets where possible. Students will learn fundamental observational skills such structural drawing, measuring, tone and basic perspective. As well as develop an understanding of how artworks are put together to create particular impressions upon the viewer. -

Design A Children’s Picture Book

The first five weeks of the course are focused on writing the first draft of your story, including brainstorming a plot, coming up with character designs and partially scripting your story. You’ll develop ideas for a page-turning script and plan a well composed storyboard.
In the second half of the course, you will focus on developing and refining your visuals, experimenting with colour pencil, watercolour and mixed media to find the best way to bring your story to life. By the end of the course, you will have a final set of illustrations, a storyboard, several pages of page layout experiments and an individual action plan to help you turn your story plans into a finished sample for a publisher.
Our tutor Rachael Ball is a published author and an experienced teacher. Her book ‘The Inflatable Woman’ was a Guardian Best Graphic Novel in 2015.
