This module will provide an introduction on the topic of “Art Psychotherapy” exploring the main theoretical frameworks and concepts through which art psychotherapy is understood and practiced in UK. The course will also introduce the professional context in which Art Psychotherapy is practiced within different clinical settings by using clinical case studies, presentations and group discussions. The program will also offer an overview of Art Psychotherapy training and career pathways currently available in the UK.

This course offers an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of Art Psychotherapy with experiential and creative workshops with particular emphasis on the central role of the images and art making as a holder of client’s emotional experience and as form of non-verbal and unconscious communication between client and therapist.

Using a wide range of art materials, the facilitator will support participants with integrating a creative aspect to theories learnt on the course. This is an interesting course where you’ll combine both writing and illustrating to create your own engaging children’s story. The first five weeks of the course are focused on writing the first draft of your story, including brainstorming a plot, coming up with character designs and partially scripting your story. You’ll develop ideas for a page-turning script and plan a well composed storyboard.

In the second half of the course, you will focus on developing and refining your visuals, experimenting with colour pencil, watercolour and mixed media to find the best way to bring your story to life. By the end of the course, you will have a final set of illustrations, a storyboard, several pages of page layout experiments and an individual action plan to help you turn your story plans into a finished sample for a publisher.

Our tutor Rachael Ball is a published author and an experienced teacher. Her book ‘The Inflatable Woman’ was a Guardian Best Graphic Novel in 2015.

Developing Your Style – Painting Techniques

This course focuses on developing each student’s style of painting, both through pushing creative expression and refining technical ability. By working from the model, and by developing with a creative project, students will explore multiple ways of using paint to convey a certain message or feeling.

In the first part of the course students will be working from the figure, developing core painting skills whilst also reflecting on their use of paint. Working with oil and/or acrylic paints students will develop a series of artworks, from quick sketches to longer more developed pieces. Focus will be on developing expressive paintings that through their specific use of colour, composition and brushwork, have something to say about the human figure. This will be informed by looking at different ways other artists have used paint to achieve a certain result.

In the second part of the course students will work on a personal creative project. Students will be guided step by step through the process of developing an idea, collecting source material and references, experimenting with different techniques and approaches, before the final execution. By looking at contemporary and historical artists, and through dialogue with the group, students will develop their creative and critical awareness. This course would be a great follow on from the Intermediate Painting or Figure and Portrait Painting.

Etching Hardground and Softground. This popular course is ideal for beginners or repeat attendees.You will concentrate on hard-ground (fine line) combined with soft-ground (texture) in its various forms. You’ll develop a composition through multi-etching a zinc plate in a mordant of saline sulphate. This course is flexible, allowing you to work at your own speed – and if you’ve attended this course before, you can work on your own individual etching projects. The course fee covers materials including two polished zinc etching plates.

Open Access runs on Wednesday evening and Saturday during the day, giving you the opportunity to further develop your printmaking skills.

If you are interested in learning to sculpt the human figure then this is an ideal class for you. You have the opportunity to explore both the full figure and a portrait head sculpture with a different model for each. You will model in clay for 10 weeks: 5 weeks of Figure Sculpture from a set pose and 5 weeks of Portrait Head Sculpture from a different model. You will get a flavour of the challenges and thrills of both of these disciplines.

We would recommend this course to students who want to concentrate on learning the basics of Portrait and Figure sculpting. As well as the practice and development of working in clay from a model, also covered are measuring skills, observational skills and preparation of a piece for firing. Optional hollowing and firing of the clay sculptures are an additional cost.

Whilst structure and proportion will be the initial aim of this piece, to capture gesture and likeness of the model, we will aim to spend a significant proportion of the class modelling forms and focusing on flesh and bone, which is the main goal when sculpting a successful torso or cropped figure. In a semi reclining pose we will look at how a seated person supports their weight, whether it be on a structure or using their arms as props. Due to the size and nature of the piece and having an internal armature, it may not be possible to fire or cast this piece at the end of the class. Any student wishing to do so should speak with the tutor at the beginning of the class in order to adapt their work accordingly.

This course focuses on developing each student’s style of painting, both through pushing creative expression and refining technical ability. By working from the model, and by developing with a creative project, students will explore multiple ways of using paint to convey a certain message or feeling.

In the first part of the course students will be working from the figure, developing core painting skills whilst also reflecting on their use of paint. Working with oil and/or acrylic paints students will develop a series of artworks, from quick sketches to longer more developed pieces. Focus will be on developing expressive paintings that through their specific use of colour, composition and brushwork, have something to say about the human figure. This will be informed by looking at different ways other artists have used paint to achieve a certain result.

In the second part of the course students will work on a personal creative project. Students will be guided step by step through the process of developing an idea, collecting source material and references, experimenting with different techniques and approaches, before the final execution. By looking at contemporary and historical artists, and through dialogue with the group, students will develop their creative and critical awareness. This course would be a great follow on from the Intermediate Painting or Figure and Portrait Painting.

This popular course is ideal for beginners or repeat attendees. You will learn to carve a linoleum plate to develop a series of reduction relief prints in multiple colour combinations. Relief printing focuses on form and texture; you will learn to combine the tone, hue and saturation of multiple colours to achieve an edition of prints on archival Italian paper. There is a maximum of ten students per course guided by one to one tutoring from experienced printmaker.

Open Access runs on Wednesday evening and Saturday during the day, giving you the opportunity to further develop your printmaking skills.

‘Sculpting in Metal’ is an opportunity to explore the various practical processes involved in making metal sculptures. This course is an excellent opportunity to work on an individual project in a workshop with an experienced tutor. The course provides the required knowledge, practical skills, and Health and Safety guidance to work with welders, angle grinders and other specialist metal working machinery. Primarily a practical course, you will gain a structured understanding of stone as a material, learn basic carving techniques and discover ways of being creative with this wonderful medium. Through practising all of these aspects, they will come together in the creation of your finished piece of work. Using your initial sketches of what you would like to carve (plan view, front view and section) to help understand the form before modelling it in clay, followed by one-to-one discussion, you will then quickly move into carving to progress your ideas into stone.
