    If you are interested in learning to sculpt the human figure then this is an ideal class for you. You have the opportunity to explore both the full figure and a portrait head sculpture with a different model for each. You will model in clay for 8 weeks: 4 weeks of Figure Sculpture from a set pose and 4 weeks of Portrait Head Sculpture from a different model. You will get a flavour of the challenges and thrills of both of these disciplines.

    We would recommend this course to students who want to concentrate on learning the basics of Portrait and Figure sculpting. As well as the practice and development of working in clay from a model, also covered are measuring skills, observational skills and preparation of a piece for firing. Optional hollowing and firing of the clay sculptures are an additional cost.

    An ideal start point for those wishing to explore sculpture techniques and ideas. This course covers both foundation technical skills and a creative exploration of different materials and ways of working. The first half of the term comprises three weeks of figurative sculpture in clay with a life model and two weeks of portraiture with another life model, also in clay. The second half of the term is an introduction to plaster, wire and other materials, culminating in a personal project.     The “Open Life Class” is a relaxed and enjoyable life drawing & painting course with a life model for various poses lasting between one and four weeks at a time. Students will be able to approach the human figure in any way they please and do as many drawings or paintings as they care to pursue with as much or as little instruction as they like. Your experienced tutors will happily guide both beginners and the more experienced painters. Students should feel free to use whichever materials that they enjoy the most, whether that is drawing in charcoal or ink or painting in oils or acrylics. All paper is provided for the course but please bring your own drawing/painting materials.

    As well as being very informative, this course is great fun and offers the fantastic opportunity to paint in and around the landscape of London Bridge. The Art Academy is just a short stroll from all sorts of exciting locations that could become a focus of a painting; the Thames, the Tate, Borough Market, Tower Bridge, St Paul’s, the shard, building sites and lots of small gardens. The majority of this course will be based outdoors painting on site, although there will be a studio available for use if the weather prevents us from working outdoors. You will learn techniques of tone, colour, atmosphere, composition, perspective, as well as how to be organised and efficient with materials when working out and about. The course culminates in the studio developing a more ambitious painting working from sketches or photos.

    This is a well structured course giving students opportunity to understand how to paint a portrait.     Relief Printing: Linoleum Reduction

    This popular course is ideal for beginners or repeat attendees. You will learn to carve a linoleum plate to develop a series of reduction relief prints in multiple colour combinations. Relief printing focuses on form and texture; you will learn to combine the tone, hue and saturation of multiple colours to achieve an edition of prints on archival Italian paper. There is a maximum of ten students per course guided by one to one tutoring from experienced printmaker.

    Open Access runs on Wednesday evening and Saturday during the day, giving you the opportunity to further develop your printmaking skills.

    The studio is a low-​toxic environment with dedicated printmaking facilities for professional hands-on learning. Students benefit from the diversity of attendees, taught by internationally renowned printmaking artists at a central location, offering a unique educational experience in London.

    This stimulating and exciting  course is taking place over 4 consecutive Sunday mornings and is an ideal way to explore a wide variety of artistic methods and media, learn new skills, discover what you enjoy most, and develop creative ideas. Students will work across the different disciplines of painting, sculpture, drawing and printmaking. Students will have a chance to improve observational drawing skills; try out more expressive sculpture and painting, and learn how to approach the human figure, using a variety of materials and methods. This is a great ‘taster’ course and an excellent opportunity to develop new skills, explore materials and have fun.

  • Stone Carving

    Primarily a practical course, you will gain a structured understanding of stone as a material, learn basic carving techniques and discover ways of being creative with this wonderful medium. Through practising all of these aspects, they will come together in the creation of your finished piece of work. Using your initial sketches of what you would like to carve (plan view, front view and section) to help understand the form before modelling it in clay, followed by one-to-one discussion, you will then quickly move into carving to progress your ideas into stone.

    Please note that there is an additional fee for initial purchase of stone, which varies depending on the type of stone you wish to use. Art Academy staff are able to advise ahead of booking.
