We have spaces left on part-time courses starting this September. These courses take place one day a week (10am – 5pm) for ten weeks at our Mermaid Court site, near London Bridge. They offer in-depth skills training across painting, drawing, printmaking, photography & video and sculpture, under the expert guidance of eminent practising artists. And you’ll learn in small groups of no more than 15 students, giving you a hands-on, tailored experience. Take a look at our part-time course highlights below, or see our full list here.

Sculpture in Practice (Mondays, 16th September – 25th November)

Explore a wide range of sculptural forms, language, materials and processes. Throughout the class, your tutor will provide individual support to help develop your own approach – whether you want to explore a wide range of materials and techniques, or focus on a particular area of interest.

Immediate Printmaking: Drypoint, Carborundum and Collagraph (Mondays, 16th September – 25th November)

Experiment with intaglio and relief techniques, using texture and tone to make prints that are both painterly and graphic. You’ll learn to use monoprint, collagraph and drypoint plates in a low-toxic environment to develop a fast and immediate style of printmaking. This course is ideal for students who wish to bring their drawing, texture and colour skills to the print studio, to complete a series of multi-plate colour prints in a unique self-led project.

Oil Painting (Thursdays, 19th September – 28th November)

This course is suitable for those who have little or no experience with oils and wish to improve their technical skills. You’ll gain a basic understanding of how to work in oil paint and the practicalities of using oil painting materials. By the end of the course, you’ll have the confidence to work in oils and your tutor will help you start to develop a technical skill that can be used successfully to convey your visual ideas.

Etching: Hardground, Softground and Aquatint (Thursdays, 19th September – 28th November)

This course explores painting through etching with a focus on line, texture and tone; an approach originally utilised by Francesco Goya and still employed by contemporary artists today. Using a low-toxic saline sulphate mordant, you’ll learn to paint with sugar and etch aluminium and zinc plate to realise a series of print editions.

Space and Structure (Fridays, 20th September – 20th November)

Deepen your understanding of space and structure in drawing using both 2D and 3D techniques. You’ll explore different ways of creating levels of space such as geometric perspective and layering, and also explore movement, scale and mass by developing off-site architectural and structural drawings. The course will also cover alternative approaches to drawing, including working with shadows and lit structures, drawing in 3D and using drawing to respond to real space through spatial intervention.

Portrait & Figure Painting (Saturdays, 21st September – 30th November)

Our Saturday Portrait and Figure Painting course introduces different approaches within the medium; this term, James Bland will teach a course focusing on relationships. You’ll be introduced to ways of understanding tonal value, colour and drawing in relation to each other, and consider the relationship between artists and model by looking at how to respond with expression and empathy to the sitter.
