Don’t miss out: last chance for August short courses

July 22nd, 2019

Learn something new and get creative this summer – it’s not too late to book your space on our August evening, weekend and short courses, available across a variety of disciplines including painting, sculpture, drawing, digital art and more.

Take a look at some of our highlighted courses below or view all our short courses here.

Relief Printing – Multiplate Woodcut (Tuesdays, 27th August – 24th September 2019): experienced printmaker Carol Wilhide-Justin will teach you the art of carving Japanese plywood plates to create a multi-plate print edition on archival Italian paper. All materials are included in the course fee.

Etching – Aquatint, Sugarlift and Spitbite (Thursdays, 29th August – 26th September 2019): guided by Katherine Jones, an experienced printmaker with work held in the V&A print collection – you’ll concentrate on tonal etching in all its forms. Working at your own speed, you’ll develop a composition by multi-etching a zinc plate in a mordant of saline sulphate. All materials are included in the course fee.

Experimental Etching (24th & 25th August): explore a more painterly side of etching with one-to-one tuition from Frederic Morris. You’ll depart from tradition when etching your plates, experimenting with brushing, splashing, dripping, blowing and smudging to produce fascinating, unique prints.

Digital Animation (19th August – 23rd August 2019): learn how to create ‘hand drawn’ 2D animation using Photoshop. You’ll explore and experiment with frame-by-frame techniques that bring your digital drawings to life. Working on a graphics table and drawing directly into Photoshop, you’ll finish the course with a GIF to share and a good understanding of how to use the software.

Pewter Casting using the “Lost Wax” Technique (27th August – 30th August): a practical, workshop-based course suitable for beginners and experienced artists who want to experiment with metal cast sculpture. You’ll have hands-on tuition in how to model a sculpture in wax, cast in pewter using plaster waste moulds, and the ‘lost wax’ casting technique.

Drawing Views of London (27th August-30th August): a wonderful opportunity to explore outdoor sketching at various sites near the Academy. Each day, your tutor will introduce a new material or drawing technique for you to explore, including charcoal and tone, drawing the figure in motion, and structure, perspective and proportion.

Portrait Sculpture Masterclass with Jane Hamilton (27th August – 30th August 2019): build on your previous experience by creating a clay portrait sculpture from a life model, creating a finished piece by the end of the week. Refresh, renew or find alternative ways of looking through group and individual discussion with your tutor, Jane Hamilton, who is a Member of Society of Portrait Sculptors.
