Newington Gallery Use and Hire

Due to Covid-19 distancing measures and precautions that we put in place, we are no longer able to hire the Newington gallery to public. 

The Newington building is used to provide extra studios for students and offers a public programme of short courses. We offer the double-height ground floor library space as a venue for other charitable organisations and art groups to host diverse activities including public programmes, workshops, talks and exhibitions.

Our first free public exhibition programme opened in September 2017 with ‘Andy Holden & Peter Holden: Natural Selection’, commissioned and produced by Artangel, one of the UK’s pioneering facilitators of daring and innovative public art. We are now inviting other artists and local community groups to exhibit with us.

Political Existencies – Celebrating Trans Day of Visibility 2020: Emil Lombardo and Spectra: 3rd – 6th September 2020

Unseen Labour: Group Show: 10th March – 16th March 2020: Private View Wednesday 11th March 2020, 6pm – 9pm, Open 12th&13th, 2pm – 8:30pm and 14th&15th, 11am – 7pm

Unseen Labour is an exhibition by an intergenerational group of women whose common values – and affective bonds – unite them in their exploration of the theme: Titus Davies’s photographs invite us to look through the brick walls that conceal domestic labour, while Sophie Adams’s painting depicts the never-ending, taken for granted nature of domestic chores; Gilli Salvat’s paintings expose racist and colonialist exploitation in factories and agriculture; Marion Hack’s paintings recall the struggle against oppression and for equality; Caroline Halliday’s photographs focus on the tools of those who labour unseen; Julia Maddison’s film offers a meditation labour of the dying and those who support them. Anne O’Driscoll’s objects contain vestiges of spent energy- intersections, crises, encounters, directions , rejections, and whims; Kath Fraser explores the unseen intent of the creative process in painting and print; Judit Prieto’s paintings celebrate nature’s unseen labours and Sabrina Fuller’s sound pieces and video the transformational nature of creative resistance.

An exhibition by 30 women artists celebrating International Women’s Day 2020.
This exhibition is a celebration of the sisterhood. Women are silenced everyday in every part of the world – from simple interruptions to acts of extreme violence. At this show a group of female artists explore gender issues and women’s rights, presenting work that illustrates their stories of sexism, physical abuse, discrimination, etc

This exhibition will also commemorate those women and movements that facilitated the empowerment of women and the feminist revolution. Being a collective of differing cultures and ages, who all work in very different media, we pursue to open new perspectives and dialogues about women’s position in society

BEAM exhibition: Group Show  25th February – 2nd March 2020

An exhibition by BEAM Art, a group run by Southwark Disablement Association (SDA). BEAM Art offers ‘disabled artists the chance to create art in a group setting with the opportunity for discussion, conversation and learning from each other in a fully accessible environment.’

We have been working in partnership with SDA to support the BEAM Art programme for over three years. Academy students Emily Russell and Jo Holt have been working in conjunction with the artists to present an exhibition that reflects the diversity of their practices, which include painting, print and poetry.

Gail Dickerson: Core Sample Exhibition

An Art and Geology project focusing on the geology of London and the area of Elephant and Castle. It explores the Rockingham Street Anomaly, the Elephant Park building site, the fluvial deposits from the River Thames and the clay and chalk of the London Basin. Layers in the work are placed using collected sediments made into earth pigments, and temporary exposures on a building site are captured on film. London’s strata is glimpsed through research and collaboration with the London Geodiversity Partnership.
