Intermediate Sculpture

COURSE CODE: EC2303002

COURSE DATES: Thursdays, 18th April – 6th June 2024

TUTOR: Laura Postle

DAYS: 8

TIMES: 6:15pm – 8:45pm

EXPERIENCE LEVEL: Intermediate

FEE: £300

LOCATION: Art Academy London, 165A Mermaid Court, SE1 1HR

The beauty of sculpting a ‘classical’ torso lies in its ability to hone the sculptor’s focus on the meticulous modelling of forms. The main focus of this course will be capturing the gesture and proportion of the model. By creating sculptures slightly larger in size, students will gain a deeper understanding of bone structures, tensed muscles, and the softness of flesh. Time will be spent looking at how to represent light and shadow; to create a nuanced likeness of the model that compositionally leads the eye around the piece.

Over 8 weeks you will create a torso sculpture by exploring the following stages:

  • Setting the pose and making basic measurements
  • Sculpting the pelvis & ribcage to create a solid internal structure
  • The abdomen and how the core is used to keep the sculpture upright, rotated and tilted
  • Shoulder girdle and focusing on which muscles are used to raise, extend or bend the arms
  • Cropping the arms & legs and how this accentuates gesture in the pose
  • Using a side light to understand depths, transition and volume
  • Looking at how light hits the body to create a hierarchy of values
  • Finally, unifying the surface

Once you have completed this course, why not look at joining one of our Sculpture Masterclasses which are led by our experienced tutors and practicing sculptors. Find more information here.

Intermediate

All attendees must be aged 18 and over.

Our Intermediate courses are suitable for students who have considerable prior knowledge of the taught medium or have completed a Beginners/Beginners + course with the Art Academy. These courses tend to be less structured and instead are tailored to the classes’ needs and the direction they want to advance in. Choose an Intermediate course if you are looking to improve your skills and have more critical discussions around the work you produce.

Please bring old clothes or an apron as you may get messy!

Most equipment and materials are provided but depending on your chosen creative approach in the latter part of the course, you may need to source some materials yourself, also bring your own sketchbook if you have one.

If you work in clay without an armature, you will be offered the opportunity to have your clay pieces fired.  Hollowing is necessary before a piece can be fired. This is optional and additional hollowing and firing costs will apply.
