This 2-day course is an exciting introduction for beginners, as well as for those with some previous experience, to gain or develop basic sculpture skills. Working mainly in clay and plaster and some other mixed media, you will learn a range of techniques with the opportunity to explore your own creative project. The combination of clay and plaster opens up creative possibilities and offers a fun weekend at your own pace. You will spend the first day creating a small clay figure sculpture from a life model. On the second day you will develop creative sculpture using plaster and mixed media no need to worry if you have nothing in mind until you arrive for the course.
This is a great opportunity to discover, or return to, making 3-dimensional work and develop an individual approach. There will be the option to leave your finished sculpture for hollowing and firing for an additional fee.

This course is suitable for students at our Beginner level.

What should I bring?
Please bring old clothes or an apron as you may get messy!
Most equipment and materials are provided but depending on your chosen creative approach in the latter part of the course, you may need to source some materials yourself, also bring your own sketchbook if you have one.
On day 2 – Please bring objects to cast and materials to create textures in plaster. (Your objects will not get damaged during the process.)
You will be offered the opportunity to have your clay pieces fired. Hollowing is necessary before a piece can be fired. This is optional and additional hollowing and firing costs will apply:

About Your Tutor
JESSICA WETHERLY
A London based sculptor, Jessica’s recent work presents creatures in curious and surreal landscapes with a sci-fi aesthetic that evoke questions of agency as we face the ecological and climate breakdown. The objects and images build worlds that investigate the blindness of anthropocentric society, using an intuitive and playful range of everyday materials haunted by human touch. A training in figurative sculpture forms the foundation to her practice in traditional sculpture techniques of modelling, moulding and casting. Jessica excels at finding practical solutions to manifest ideas into reality and is interested in helping you discover meaning to your making within a wider contemporary and historical context. She is able to help students work with composition, anatomy, form and the architecture of space, applying core principals of observation to a variety of mediums. Jessica provides step by step methods to provide access for beginners whilst improving and directing intimidate and advanced students. Jessica teaches an array of drawing, sculpture, installation and critical practice.
Jessica is a QEST Scholar and graduated from the Royal College of Art with an MA in Sculpture. Her work has been shown nationally and internationally with her first solo show in Austin, USA at the end of 2018. In 2019, Wetherly has been selected as the winner of the Broomhill National Sculpture Prize and as the bursary award winner at the Royal Society of Sculptors. She has both public and private commissions including a permanent statue in Archbishop’s Park, Lambeth. Jessica has taken part in a number of residencies both in the UK and abroad in 2020 she will be taking part in Wild Biyoo in Goa, Korai Project Space in Cyprus and BilboaArte in the Basque Country.

Refreshments and Facilities
Access to a common room and kitchen is limited while distancing measures are in place. It can be used by up to 12 people (from the same class) at scheduled break times only. The kitchen can be used by 1 person at a time for hand washing and waste disposal facilities only.
Students are currently not able to use the kitchen to prepare hot drinks and/or food. Students are able to use the coffee machine, where free hot water, and paid-for hot drinks are available. The payment is contactless.
Mugs are not available for use, and students are strongly encouraged to bring their own reusable mugs if they wish to use the coffee machine.
There is a wealth of supermarkets, shops and cafes in the area as well as the world famous Borough Food Market just moments from our Mermaid Court location.
We are always striving to improve our facilities but due Mermaid Court being an old building we have limited disability access. Should you have any access requirements please speak to a member of the Academy team before booking the course.

- You will need to have paid in full before the first session of your class. Your place is not guaranteed until we have received full payment.Please book early in order to guarantee your place on the course.
- If you purchased a pack online this will be given to you on the first session of your course upon your arrival. Packs can be booked on our Materials Page or on this page when you book the course.
- Please don’t wear your best clothes as there is always a chance you will get messy. If possible bring an apron or overalls.
- All artwork at the Academy MUST be taken home at the end of the course or it will be disposed of.
- Please ensure that your mobile phone is switched off or is on silentduring the class.
- Health and Safety Guidelines will be provided to you at the beginning of your class.
- Sometimes our photographer will pop in to get some of our classes in progress. If you would like to not be photographed please let the photographer know!
