This is a fun day-long taster course in watercolour painting for those who may be considering a longer course and are wondering how much they will enjoy it. Throughout the day the tutor will lead the class in hands-on, practical demonstrations to show you how to mix colour and see shape and tone, and how these elements relate to form a composition. We aim to foster self-certainty and an enjoyment of painting in a relaxed yet stimulating environment. The morning will be spent focusing on how to handle watercolour paint whilst working from a still-life set up using natural and organic forms. Throughout the day you will be encouraged to play and enjoy the application of paint whist also understanding techniques of working from observation.

What level is this course?

This course is suitable for students at our Beginner level.

  • Beginner

Choose a Beginners course if you are looking for a broad introduction to the medium you are studying. Students spend time learning the very basics of the taught medium, for example, how to mix colours, use different tools, set up an easel. Our Beginner courses are suitable for students with no prior experience, they tend to follow a more structured path than our other courses, ensuring each student receives the guidance they need from the tutor.

Other course levels include:

  • Beginner +

Choose a Beginner + course if you are looking to hone your skills, focus on a specific subject area and build your confidence. These courses are suitable for those with some basic skills in and knowledge of the taught medium, but still follow a structured path with guidance from the tutor.

  • Intermediate

Our Intermediate courses are suitable for students who have considerable prior knowledge of the taught medium or have completed a Beginners/Beginners + course with the Art Academy.

These courses tend to be less structured and instead are tailored to the classes’ needs and the direction they want to advance in. Choose an Intermediate course if you are looking to improve your skills and have more critical discussions around the work you produce.

  • Advanced

Choose our Advanced courses if you have considerable knowledge in the taught medium. You are expected to be able to work independently and have critical discussions around your work.

Our Advanced courses include our Masterclasses.

All attendees must be aged 18 or over.

What should I bring?

All of the materials, including watercolour paper, are supplied for this one day class. Wearing an old shirt or apron would be advantageous.

You can bring your own materials.

About Your Tutor

KIM WHITBY

Kim Whitby initially pursued her art in the direction of teaching; completing a BED Hons teaching and art degree, at King Alfred’s College in Winchester in 1993 and working professionally afterwards. In late 2012 at home in Wales, she began a part time Fine Art Masters Degree at Aberystwyth University’s School of Art, which she completed in December 2014. Since then she has worked both as an artist and evolved her teaching to include adults of all ages, which she really enjoys. She teaches workshops and longer courses in Galleries, Museums and Arts Centres in Hampshire where she is currently located, and The Art Academy in Borough Market, London. Kim works directly from life, frequently on location and particularly enjoys heritage subject matter and structures. She was grateful to have gained access to work in and around HMS Victory in Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard during her MA, and last year was selected to respond to Jane Austen’s House Museum and collection, as part of a commission for Hampshire Cultural Trust during the bicentenary commemorations of Jane Austen’s death. Kim works in ink, watercolour and oil. Sketchbooks form a key part of her process. She is interested in ideas about when drawing stops, and painting begins. Kim is delighted to have had her work recognised in the short period since her MA, through the Kyffin Williams Drawing Prize, Sunday Times Watercolour Competition and by Artist and Illustrators Magazine selecting her as an “artist to watch 2017”. She won Pintar Rapido London 2016, which is an en plein air competition. She also won her way, as a ‘wildcard’, through to the final three, on Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year in 2016.
