Young Artists is an exciting four day course for ages 12-16 providing high level art tuition, including drawing workshops, contemporary painting, specialist sculpture techniques, and using experimental media. Focused classes create a supportive environment, and there is a strong focus on personal outcomes and solutions to develop independent judgement. Access to specialist materials and facilities improve technical skills, and discussion and presentation sessions build confidence and critical understanding. This course is ideal for those studying a range of arts based GCSE subjects, or wanting to advance their artistic skills and creative confidence.
During this course we’ll cover:

How to use a range of exciting drawing techniques and experiment with materials such as charcoal and chalk

Key skills for painting the figure, how to plan the composition, mix colour, approach the body and depict volume

Using mixed media and collage, understanding abstract approaches
Learning new sculptural techniques such as clay figure sculpture

Taking an artwork through from concept to completion, and discussing and presenting ideas and artworks.

Please note, you must complete a consent form before your child can join our Young Artists programme. This form is available for download here. Please email your completed form to shortcourses@artacademy.org.uk. Your child may also bring a completed hard-copy version of this form with them on the first day of their course.

What level is this course?

This course is suitable for students between the ages of 12 to 16 and is open to all skill levels.

  • Young Artists - Aged 12-16

    Chose this course if you are aged between 12 & 16. This course is open to all skill levels, whether you love art and are looking to advance you artistic skills and creative confidence or are new to the subject and want a bit of an introduction!

What should I bring?

Please bring old clothes and two jam jars or containers for water.  Please also bring a camera/phone to photo document your work.

Preparation for the Personal Project day: students should bring in a range of images of a place, object, or concept, that excites and inspires them, to help develop their personal project.

Refreshments and Facilities

All students have access to a common room and kitchen. Here you will find tea and coffee, a fridge, kettle, microwave and eating area.

There is a wealth of supermarkets, shops and cafes in the area as well as the world famous Borough Food Market just moments from our Mermaid Court location.

We are always striving to improve our facilities but due Mermaid Court being an old building we have limited disability access. Should you have any access requirements please speak to a member of the Academy team before booking the course.

  • You will need to have paid in full before the first session of your class. Your place is not guaranteed until we have received full payment.Please book early in order to guarantee your place on the course.
  • If you purchased a pack online this will be given to you on the first session of your course upon your arrival. Packs can be booked on our Materials Page or on this page when you book the course.
  • Please don’t wear your best clothes as there is always a chance you will get messy. If possible bring an apron or overalls.
  • All artwork at the Academy MUST be taken home at the end of the course or it will be disposed of.
  • Please ensure that your mobile phone is switched off or is on silentduring the class.
  • Health and Safety Guidelines will be provided to you at the beginning of your class.
  • Sometimes our photographer will pop in to get some of our classes in progress. If you would like to not be photographed please let the photographer know!
