This fun five-day course for students aged 12-16 provides a skills-based experience and expert tuition in animation. Students will be taught skills in stop motion, digital 2D drawing and the use of Adobe Creative Suite as an animation tool.

The days will be themed and split in half; the mornings will focus on skills development and the afternoons will focus on creating an animation using the skills learnt. The course will culminate in a screening of work to peers and parents.

Students will be encouraged to work in groups and independently while challenging or responding to ideas and new skills in an enjoyable and creative space.

During this course we’ll cover the following topics:

  • Storyboarding.
  • Stop motion.
  • Physical and digital 2D drawing for animation.
  • Use of After Effects.
  • Shooting techniques and conventions.
  • Basic operation of camera.
  • Basic editing techniques.

What level is this course?

This course is suitable for students between the ages of 12 to 16 and is open to all skill levels.

  • Young Artists - Aged 12-16

    Chose this course if you are aged between 12 & 16. This course is open to all skill levels, whether you love art and are looking to advance you artistic skills and creative confidence or are new to the subject and want a bit of an introduction!

What should I bring?

Materials are provided however students may also wish to bring in a sketchbook with ideas, drawings, images and photos.

Please bring a camera or phone to document your work. Also make sure to bring protective clothing such as an apron or shirt or wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.

About Your Tutor

EMMA SEACH

Emma has been teaching since graduating from the Royal Drawing School in 2010. She taught for the Royal Drawing School for 5 years, running classes in various venues including Whitechapel Gallery, The V&A Museum, The National Gallery, and Saatchi Gallery. She has worked in both London and India teaching drawing, painting and animation to both adults and children. She set up and ran Root Drawing, an experimental drawing class for local artists and has many years experience teaching one to one. She is now continuing her painting practice on the Turps Studio Programme while teaching at the Art Academy.

Refreshments and Facilities

All students have access to a common room and kitchen. Here you will find tea and coffee, a fridge, kettle, microwave and eating area.

There is a wealth of supermarkets, shops and cafes in the area as well as the world famous Borough Food Market just moments from our Mermaid Court location.

We are always striving to improve our facilities but due Mermaid Court being an old building we have limited disability access. Should you have any access requirements please speak to a member of the Academy team before booking the course.

  • You will need to have paid in full before the first session of your class. Your place is not guaranteed until we have received full payment.Please book early in order to guarantee your place on the course.
  • If you purchased a pack online this will be given to you on the first session of your course upon your arrival. Packs can be booked on our Materials Page or on this page when you book the course.
  • Please don’t wear your best clothes as there is always a chance you will get messy. If possible bring an apron or overalls.
  • All artwork at the Academy MUST be taken home at the end of the course or it will be disposed of.
  • Please ensure that your mobile phone is switched off or is on silentduring the class.
  • Health and Safety Guidelines will be provided to you at the beginning of your class.
  • Sometimes our photographer will pop in to get some of our classes in progress. If you would like to not be photographed please let the photographer know!
