Portrait sculpture is an immensely absorbing and enjoyable discovery with every new sitter. This intermediate course aims to build upon your previous experience [Beginner/ Beginner +] to further how to observe and translate your observation into a clay portrait sculpture from a life model. Setting out a head from a structural point of view with a clear path of constructive method of approach, you will benefit from exploring with a professional sculptor to help build upon your own sculptural progression.

Jessica’s technique uses precise measurement and triangulation with the use of callipers and principles of architecture. Jessica will make a demonstration head during the class to help students throughout the course visualise the technique and put it into practice.

Advanced students will have the opportunity to work at different scales if they feel confident with the technique.

There will be the option to leave your finished sculptures for hollowing and firing for an additional fee.

What level is this course?

This course is suitable for students at our Intermediate level.

  • Intermediate

Our Intermediate courses are suitable for students who have considerable prior knowledge of the taught medium or have completed a Beginners/Beginners + course with the Art Academy.

These courses tend to be less structured and instead are tailored to the classes’ needs and the direction they want to advance in. Choose an Intermediate course if you are looking to improve your skills and have more critical discussions around the work you produce.

Other course levels include:

  • Beginner

Choose a Beginners course if you are looking for a broad introduction to the medium you are studying. Students spend time learning the very basics of the taught medium, for example, how to mix colours, use different tools, set up an easel. Our Beginner courses are suitable for students with no prior experience, they tend to follow a more structured path than our other courses, ensuring each student receives the guidance they need from the tutor.

  • Beginner +

Choose a Beginner + course if you are looking to hone your skills, focus on a specific subject area and build your confidence. These courses are suitable for those with some basic skills in and knowledge of the taught medium, but still follow a structured path with guidance from the tutor.

  • Advanced

Choose our Advanced courses if you have considerable knowledge in the taught medium. You are expected to be able to work independently and have critical discussions around your work.

Our Advanced courses include our Masterclasses.

All attendees must be aged 18 or over.

What should I bring?

  • Please bring old clothes or an apron as you may get messy!

About Your Tutor

JESSICA WETHERLY

A London based sculptor, Jessica’s recent work presents creatures in curious and surreal landscapes with a sci-fi aesthetic that evoke questions of agency as we face the ecological and climate breakdown. The objects and images build worlds that investigate the blindness of anthropocentric society, using an intuitive and playful range of everyday materials haunted by human touch. A training in figurative sculpture forms the foundation to her practice in traditional sculpture techniques of modelling, moulding and casting. Jessica excels at finding practical solutions to manifest ideas into reality and is interested in helping you discover meaning to your making within a wider contemporary and historical context. She is able to help students work with composition, anatomy, form and the architecture of space, applying core principals of observation to a variety of mediums. Jessica provides step by step methods to provide access for beginners whilst improving and directing intimidate and advanced students. Jessica teaches an array of drawing, sculpture, installation and critical practice.
Jessica is a QEST Scholar and graduated from the Royal College of Art with an MA in Sculpture. Her work has been shown nationally and internationally with her first solo show in Austin, USA at the end of 2018. In 2019, Wetherly has been selected as the winner of the Broomhill National Sculpture Prize and as the bursary award winner at the Royal Society of Sculptors. She has both public and private commissions including a permanent statue in Archbishop’s Park, Lambeth. Jessica has taken part in a number of residencies both in the UK and abroad in 2020 she will be taking part in Wild Biyoo in Goa, Korai Project Space in Cyprus and BilboaArte in the Basque Country.
