This course aims to introduce students to watercolour techniques. This will be done using both watercolour and ink; as most watercolour techniques can be introduced with monotone ink in the initial stage, and evolved into colour work at the next. There will be a focus on exploring the particular qualities of water-based mediums in simple stages, a great many sketchbook-style studies will be made and students will be encouraged to work spontaneously. Watercolour is a fabulous sketching medium and the course will aim to further students sketching confidence and ability, with some off site working if possible. The tutor will lead you to draw inspiration from observation and by exploring other artists’ work. The tutor will guide you step by step through the stages of planning and sequencing a work on paper. The course covers basic water based painting techniques. You will be coached in ways to control the medium and execute a work on paper, using both watercolour and ink. You will use ink to learn about tone, mark making and wet mediums and be taught simple practical colour theory when working in watercolour. The course will build skills in the first weeks and build on these in the following weeks.
