This course introduces central themes in feminist art history and key women artists. There will be discussion on the writings of feminist art theoreticians and the challenges facing women artists today and how women artists are currently responding to gender inequality in the art world.
Each week will have a different theme including Motherhood, Illness and Violence, where students will be introduced to the work of significant women artists. Students will be encouraged to view art with a critical eye and discuss their responses to artwork. Student engagement with the course can take the form of both critical and personal responses and there will be the opportunity to develop these responses further. There is no expectation that students should have any background knowledge and it is designed for general interest rather than academic study. There will be an opportunity for a gallery visit and also a visit to the studio of a contemporary woman artist.
