Learning how to paint portraits from the Masters has long been a tradition in figurative art, with Master painters themselves learning from their forebears; this course will continue this tradition. You will have the opportunity to study and analyse the approach taken by great portrait painters from history by undertaking in-depth study of paintings by the Masters and apply something of the techniques and approaches used by these artists. This course gives you a valuable insight into how these artists worked and will help you to think about how to paint a portrait and how you could develop a painting.
Your tutor will first discuss some of the techniques used by the artists. Then, working directly from the paintings in a London gallery, drawing on site and painting in the studio, you will analyse and create copies of well-known portraits. For the final part of the course, the class will develop portraits of their own, influenced in some way by the portrait you have been copying.
