This course explores the structure of painting, investigating how paintings are put together and why. Moving beyond traditional expectations of the word ‘composition’, you will work towards an in depth understanding of how paintings communicate. You will explore these themes through painting and will be encouraged to push and develop the work in terms of a painterly vocabulary, scale and surface. Each theme will be actively contextualised by looking at and discussing a range of relevant contemporary and modern artists. There is a strong emphasis on why throughout the course, and you should be prepared to challenge your own assumptions about painting and to really develop your individual painting language.
