This course is for people keen to develop an understanding of their own preoccupation with abstract painting, or simply understand the medium better. We will think about the language of paint, looking at technical and methodical approaches to making an ‘abstract painting’ in historical and contemporary context. This course is premised around your own interests in cultural heritage. You will be asked to question a variety of approaches to formulate your ideas and frame them in a contemporary context. You will make a variety of visual work – paintings, drawings and collages. Through practical exercises, discussions of key artists, visits to galleries and group critiques, you will start to develop your own visual vocabulary and critical understanding of your own work.
