As an arts education charity, we believe art can be a powerful force for community cohesion, social engagement, skills development and urban regeneration. We are committed to a programme of outreach and community art activities, mainly focused on our local boroughs of Southwark and Lambeth.
We are very happy to be working with Southwark Council to renovate the old Newington Library building on Walworth Road, near Elephant and Castle. The Council has offered us the building for two years, to run Art Academy courses and manage the community activity space and exhibition space. We want to bring life back to the building, make it more accessible to the local community and provide a great venue for local people to enjoy diverse activities. The space also allows us to provide Resident Artist studio spaces, something we are very proud of after a series of studio closures in the local area.
“All the tutors who have come to us including currently have made a huge impact in terms of empowering the members, who are a diverse group, with varying needs and limitations. For some they have had the opportunity to experiment and develop new skills while other more confident and established artists have found new ways to express themselves through printmaking and recently, ceramics.” BEAM.

Art Academy London is a young and innovative art school, offering courses that are designed and delivered by expert, practising artists. We were founded in 2000 to offer something different: the best of an old-school atelier combined with the vibrancy and diversity of a contemporary art school. This still differentiates us today.
As an art education charity, we’re passionate about championing art for all, and we think this inclusive approach creates a very special environment. We offer art courses for all levels of skill and need – from a BA or Foundation Degree, to evening, weekend and short courses. We also provide support with bursaries and special education needs, and our community outreach programmes help make art education accessible in Southwark and the surrounding area.
Our students are diverse but united by a shared ethos and, to date, we’ve helped train around 20,000 people across our different courses. We don’t define our students: we give them the skills to define themselves.
What also sets us apart from other art schools is our intensive and hands-on teaching approach: we keep our class sizes small, so our tutors can provide tailored tuition and ensure that everyone is nurtured and challenged to become the best artist they can be.
