Dear All, At AAL, we pride ourselves on championing “art for all”. This is a core part of our ethos and we are passionate about helping individuals to unlock their unique creative skills, regardless of their background or circumstances. We are proud of our record here, but we also know we need to challenge ourselves to do more. In light of this year’s Black Lives Matter protests and the wider conversation around diversity and inclusion, we are committing to identifying additional steps we can take to counter racism and the systemic barriers which marginalised communities experience. As such, we’re partway through consulting with our staff and community on how we will increase representation across all levels of the AAL, to reflect more closely the rich diversity of our localities – Southwark and Lambeth. The outcome of these discussions, together with the input from a network of external advisors, will inform an ambitious action plan to be published by December 2020. Initiatives already underway include: Our aim is to develop a culture where diversity is hard-wired into everything we do, is understood by all of us, and where we all have an opportunity to be a part of this ongoing conversation. We are committed to building on good foundations to be even more ambitious in this regard, and we look forward to publicising details of our final action plan later this year. When is the Academy reopening?
The Academy is reopening its doors on 13th July 2020 for its Summer School and for its academic programmes in September 2020.
What can I do to help the Academy?
As a small independent artist-led institution the Academy does not receive any government funding. The coronavirus pandemic has been hugely significant for us. Not being able to run our public courses has meant the loss of one of our most important income streams. Formed in 2019, our Patron Scheme has never been more essential to ensuring we are able to continue supporting our vibrant artistic community and meet our goal of making art education accessible to all.
Find out more about becoming a patron by emailing patrons@artacademy.org.uk or our Principal at principal@artacademy.org.uk.
What measures are the Academy putting to ensure the safety of its students, tutors, models and staff?
At the Academy, the health and wellbeing of our community are paramount. Our priority at all times is to ensure that our site is as safe as possible for everybody using it.
We are following Government regulations and working with representatives from within our community and beyond to make sure the Academy remains a safe space.
We are initiating a programme of safety measures as our staff, students, tutors and models return to their place of study or work over the coming weeks and months. These measures will be subject to constant review and will no doubt grow and evolve as guidance changes. They include UK-standard social distancing measures, increased frequency of onsite cleaning, promoting the use of face coverings, signage and guidance, and the provision of handwashing and hand sanitising facilities.
Academy tutors, on both academic and public courses, can find out more specific information about health and safety protocols by reading the Covid-19 Tutor protocols.
Is the Academy still running Creative Days?
Yes. Creative Days typically take place in artist studios at our main site, Mermaid Court, which is a five-minute walk from Borough or London Bridge stations. Alternatively, we can arrange your event to take place at your workplace or an alternative site.
We are also delighted to soon be running our first online Creative Day, and while we’re keeping things small for the time being we hope to be able to expand this offer in due course.
Please email creativeday@artacademy.org.uk or call +44 020 7701 2880 to talk to our team about our Creative Days.
I am a contractor. Will I still be able to access the Academy?
Yes. A small number of Academy staff are currently working in and out of the premises and so with prior arrangement it is possible to access our site. Please contact harriet@artacademy.org.uk

Art Academy London is to make protective visors for NHS staff. The Academy will purchase additional 3D printers to make the masks. The printers will be operated by Julian Wild, Academy Sculpture Pathway Leader and each printer can make hundreds a week.
The Academy is responding to a request from a North London GP, who runs two practices in central Camden, at the heart of the Corvid 19 epidemic. His staff may not be able to obtain sufficient Personal Protective Equipment, so Dr Moghissi approached the Academy to see if it could help.
The Art Academy team have responded quickly to the call and Principal Rob Pepper said “We are abiding by the government’s advice to stay home and stay safe, however we’re desperate to try and help wherever we can. All the NHS staff are on the frontline risking their lives to keep us well, and we’ll be forever thankful to them for that. When Dr Moghissi got in touch it took moments for us to put a plan together. We take delivery of our first printer on Wednesday and Julian will start production straight away.”
The printers cost £2,000 each: the Academy needs your help to buy them and pay for the £50 filament spools that can make 36 visors. The first sets of frames will be sent to Alex’s practice and subsequent frames will be sent to a central assembly point to be connected to the screens, sterilised and then delivered to the NHS.
Dr Alex Moghissi said “There is huge concern that we may not have enough full PPE. We are part of a group of pan Camden GPs who send clinical staff to the central Camden ‘hot’ hub for Covid 19 – these staff need full PPE including visors. Clinical and non clinical staff in both my practices also need varying levels of protection when they’re working from the practice or visiting patients at home. We need to source more visors urgently. Any help the Academy could offer would help to protect NHS staff and save lives.”

ONE | ROB PEPPER, PRINCIPAL
(2020) THE TALE OF DAY BREAK
OIL ON CANVAS, 40 x 90 cm
Rob Pepper is collected internationally and two of his works were gifted by the British Prime Minister to President Xi of China. The Tale of Day Break is a celebration of life and a riot of colour as we reflect on the beauty and responsibilities we have in our world.
TWO | SUE SPAULL, DIRECTOR OF PROGRAMMES
(2020) REFLECTIONS
OIL ON LINEN, 60 x 70 cm
Mark Doty wrote: “in a still life, there is no end to our looking, which has become allied with the gaze of the painter; we look in and in, to the world of things, in their ambiance of cool or warm light, in and in, as long as we can stand to look, as long as we take pleasure in looking.” Reflections focuses on the quality of the shape and form of the apples in the image, whilst using composition, light and tone to give the viewer a sense of the apples and their reflections floating in space. This creates a further dimension to the painting making the familiar unexpected and arresting the viewer’s gaze.
THREE | ALISON HAND, BA PROGRAMME LEADER
(2015) BIRDS
ACRYLIC ON BOARD, 60 x 60 cm
Birds explores the promise of an unfolding structure in a hidden landscape. Scaffolding becomes emblematic of human intervention and ideas of the monumental, but also of flux and transformation. Dusk acts as an atmospheric veil, partially revealing the built and the unbuilt.
FOUR | ROXANA HALLS, FD CONTEMPORARY PORTRAITURE PATHWAY LEADER
(2011) WALKING ON THE CEILING
OIL ON CANVAS, 91 x 122 cm
Walking The Ceiling, taken from Halls’ Shadow Play series, was exhibited in Hayhill Gallery in 2011. The Shadow Play paintings, with their evocative colour and pop-up confections, reference the then prevailing taste for vintage object and their aspiration to capture a quintessential Englishness. These works present the mise-en-scene of a rather ladylike world in a palette to match but one where all is in flux, flying through air or impossibly balanced.
FIVE | KATHERINE JONES, PRINT MANAGER
(2020) CLEAR SURFACE
COLLAGRAPH & BLOCK PRINT, 80 x 59.5 cm
Katherine Jones is a British printmaker, painter and collected by the V&A, Ashmolean Museum, Yale University Library and the House of Lords. Her work revolves around our perceptions of safety and danger, focusing on ordinary objects, spaces and buildings as a framework to begin to question these nebulous themes.
SIX | JULIAN WILD, FD SCULPTURE PATHWAY LEADER
(2020) STRIPPING THE WILLOW NO. 4
BRONZE, LACQUER AND PAINT
30 x 46 x 15 cm
This piece is part of series of sculptures that reference mankind’s intervention with nature. It draws on woodland management techniques and activities that rely on the plant’s ability to re- grow. The bronze geometric arch mimics a natural structure. The arch is cut and split revealing a vibrant red, creating the conceit that the bronze has a living interior.
Thanks also to the tutors and alumni who are exhibiting their works in the dining area. These works will also be available for purchase on the night:

NEWINGTON
In September 2017 Southwark Council granted the Art Academy use of the former Newington Library, Walworth Road. The site allows us to expand our short course offering, give more studio space to our academic students and manage a new public gallery space, available for exhibitions and cumminuty activities. Southwark Council has supported the Academy to take on this additional premises for two years.
We also have Resident Artist studios to rent at our Newington site. Studios vary in size from 60 square foot to 800 square foot and are available at competitive rates. The studios are accessible from 7am to 11pm and contracts are rolling monthly with one month notice required. For more information on the Resident Artist spaces we have available please email our Operations Manager, astrid@artacademy.org.uk or call us on +44 (0) 20 7701 2880.

Due to Covid-19 distancing measures and precautions that we put in place, we are no longer able to hire the Newington gallery to public.
The Newington building is used to provide extra studios for students and offers a public programme of short courses. We offer the double-height ground floor library space as a venue for other charitable organisations and art groups to host diverse activities including public programmes, workshops, talks and exhibitions.
Our first free public exhibition programme opened in September 2017 with ‘Andy Holden & Peter Holden: Natural Selection’, commissioned and produced by Artangel, one of the UK’s pioneering facilitators of daring and innovative public art. We are now inviting other artists and local community groups to exhibit with us.

Unseen Labour is an exhibition by an intergenerational group of women whose common values – and affective bonds – unite them in their exploration of the theme: Titus Davies’s photographs invite us to look through the brick walls that conceal domestic labour, while Sophie Adams’s painting depicts the never-ending, taken for granted nature of domestic chores; Gilli Salvat’s paintings expose racist and colonialist exploitation in factories and agriculture; Marion Hack’s paintings recall the struggle against oppression and for equality; Caroline Halliday’s photographs focus on the tools of those who labour unseen; Julia Maddison’s film offers a meditation labour of the dying and those who support them. Anne O’Driscoll’s objects contain vestiges of spent energy- intersections, crises, encounters, directions , rejections, and whims; Kath Fraser explores the unseen intent of the creative process in painting and print; Judit Prieto’s paintings celebrate nature’s unseen labours and Sabrina Fuller’s sound pieces and video the transformational nature of creative resistance.

This exhibition is a celebration of the sisterhood. Women are silenced everyday in every part of the world – from simple interruptions to acts of extreme violence. At this show a group of female artists explore gender issues and women’s rights, presenting work that illustrates their stories of sexism, physical abuse, discrimination, etc
This exhibition will also commemorate those women and movements that facilitated the empowerment of women and the feminist revolution. Being a collective of differing cultures and ages, who all work in very different media, we pursue to open new perspectives and dialogues about women’s position in society

Gail Dickerson: Core Sample Exhibition
An Art and Geology project focusing on the geology of London and the area of Elephant and Castle. It explores the Rockingham Street Anomaly, the Elephant Park building site, the fluvial deposits from the River Thames and the clay and chalk of the London Basin. Layers in the work are placed using collected sediments made into earth pigments, and temporary exposures on a building site are captured on film. London’s strata is glimpsed through research and collaboration with the London Geodiversity Partnership.
BEAM Exhibition
An exhibition by BEAM Art, a group run by Southwark Disablement Association (SDA). BEAM Art offers ‘disabled artists the chance to create art in a group setting with the opportunity for discussion, conversation and learning from each other in a fully accessible environment.’
We have been working in partnership with SDA to support the BEAM Art programme for over three years. Academy students Emily Russell and Jo Holt have been working in conjunction with the artists to present an exhibition that reflects the diversity of their practices, which include painting, print and poetry.
Shadowbox Exhibition
An exhibition of six contemporary artists exploring truth and fiction within the context of our shifting cultural landscape.
Mind the Art Exhibition
A group exhibition raising awareness of mental health through art.
