This 2­ day course is an exciting introduction for beginners, as well as for those with some previous experience, to gain or develop basic sculpture skills. Working mainly in clay and plaster and some other mixed media, you will learn a range of techniques with the opportunity to explore your own creative project. The combination of clay and plaster opens up creative possibilities and offers a fun weekend at your own pace. You will spend the first day creating a small clay figure sculpture from a life model. On the second day you will develop creative sculpture using plaster and mixed media ­ no need to worry if you have nothing in mind until you arrive for the course.

This is a great opportunity to discover, or return to, making 3-­dimensional work and develop an individual approach. There will be the option to leave your finished sculpture for hollowing and firing for an additional fee.

This is the perfect 2-­day course for those who have made a number of figure sculptures in a more traditional manner and would like to further explore avenues of creativity. For Intermediate to Advanced students, you will be working in clay from a life model, without using an inner armature structure. You will build upon previous experience to hone your observation, and translate that observation and ideas into an expression of the figure. Through clay and drawing exercises, you will refresh, renew and find alternative ways of exploring the pose. You will build upon your own sculptural expression with the help and guidance of a professional sculptor. The course offers you an opportunity to develop your sculptural practice into abstraction, with guidance from your tutor, Julian Wild, Vice-President of the Royal British Society of Sculptors.  Along with discussion with the group, you will identify what abstraction is and how you can make abstract or abstracted sculpture, exploring new techniques and materials with which to create your art.

Julian Wild graduated from Kingston University in 1995 and has over 20 years of experience of making abstract and abstracted sculpture in a variety of materials and processes. He has been commissioned to make public sculptures by organisations such Cass Sculpture Foundation, Fidelity Investments and Oxford University and has exhibited widely including Chatsworth House, William Benington Gallery, Modern Art Oxford, Sculpture in the City and The Saatchi Gallery. He was shortlisted for the Jerwood Sculpture Prize in 2005 and was awarded the prestigious RBKC/CACT studio bursary in 2009. Julian has also taught sculpture regularly in further and higher education.

This practical course is suitable for beginners and experienced artists who want to experiment with metal cast sculpture. Pewter is a metal that can be cast and finished in your own studio, with relatively basic equipment, and without the need of a foundry. Pewter is a silver coloured tin metal alloy which melts at low temperatures. During the course you will model a sculpture in wax, learn how to make a re-usable rubber mould and cast in pewter.
Bring your own ideas or come with an open mind and be inspired to work with new materials and sculpture techniques. This is a practical workshop based course with one to one and group guidance from the tutor.
