A well-structured and systematic course for those who have never painted before or want to start from the beginning. Students learn to see colour, shape and tone and relate all these elements together through composition. This course aims to foster self-confidence and enjoyment of painting in a stimulating community environment. There will be work from both still life and life models. Students will learn how to handle oil paint and understand different ways of approaching painting. Throughout the course students will learn from works of many artists to improve their development. There is plenty of guidance from the tutor and the course is fun and relaxed.

The Clothed Portrait Painting Masterclass with Roxana Halls

This five day course offers the fantastic opportunity to study under the tuition of Roxana Halls, focussing on the clothed figure and portraiture and working with costume and fabric to create a narrative for a painting. Throughout the week students will be painting directly from costumed life models. The course will begin with warm up drawings and oil sketches, both tonal and colour, and with Roxana’s guidance students will begin working towards developing a large scale painting from the figure.

Roxana Halls has held several successful solo exhibitions including at the National Theatre and onCork St, Mayfair. Her work has been included in numerous exhibitions such as the B.P. Portrait Award on five occasions, the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the Ruth Borchard Self – Portrait exhibition, also in many group shows, art competitions and art fairs. Her awards include the Villiers David Prize & the Discerning Eye’s Founder’s Purchase Prize. Her work is held in many private and public collections in the UK & internationally.

Portrait Painting Masterclass with Anastasia Pollard

This five day portrait painting course offers a fantastic opportunity for intensive study from two portrait models, under the expert tutelage of Anastasia Pollard RP. The course is designed to help students further develop their skills in painting a good portrait likeness. Throughout the week we will combine drawing, tonal painting studies and limited palette sketches; these will be building blocks towards a fully developed three day portrait in oil. Accuracy of observation and measurement will be of great importance but not at the expense of making a fresh, energised and expressive response in paint to the sitter. The students will also be encouraged to work intuitively and expressively in tandem with an emphasis on accuracy of observation. You will receive one-to-one guidance throughout the course, and Anastasia will be on hand to give regular feedback and constructive advice. The course is a valuable opportunity for more experienced painters to develop their portrait painting skills.

Figure Painting Masterclass with Sarah Jane Moon

This figure painting course will offer an opportunity for intensive study under the tuition of Sarah Jane Moon. The course will include opportunies to visually think through composition, colour and tone in a graphic and bold way through drawing and painting from the model. A day will be spent drawing and studying tone in anticipation of three days creating a dynamic and fully realised figure painting.

Sarah Jane Moon is a painter who specialises in portraiture and figurative painting. She has exhibited with the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the New English Art Club among others. In 2015 she was awarded the Arts Charitable Trust Award and in 2013 the Bulldog Bursary for Portraiture. She has also been included in the 2016 Pride Power List, which celebrates the achievements of notable LGBT people.
