The Monday Mix is an ideal way to explore a whole variety of artistic methods. Over 10 weeks, students work through various types of painting, sculpture, drawing and printmaking. This is a great ‘taster’ course and an excellent opportunity to develop skills as well as creativity with your own ideas.
During the course students will explore basic drawing skills as well as more expressive painting and sculpture. The course will also give you a change to paint and sculpt the human figure, before finishing with a taster of printmaking. It is great fun and by the end students will have a learnt a whole range of different skills.

Hand Built Ceramics

A comprehensive introduction into the methods and creative potential of sculptural ceramics. The course covers studio practice, clay types, basic core techniques of handbuilding for sculpture: coiling, pinching, slab building.
These will be taught and put into practice to make finished ceramic forms. Through practical projects you will learn to understand the material and with the emphasis on experimentation how you can manipulate it to create a variety of forms. These can then be decorated with raw glazes, slips and engobes for a once fired finished piece.

An exploration of the intriguing, magical world of kiln formed glass, this course allows you to learn a variety of techniques including fusing, slumping, hand cut stencils, sandblasting, inclusions, u.v. bonding and surface decoration. Course tutor Maria Zulueta is a well-respected glassmaker, producing work at vastly different scales from table pieces to installations with a wealth of experience in supporting students in learning new skills. Under her expert guidance you will use a range of techniques to build a collection of samples and create a final piece. You are free to explore your preferred techniques and those of you who have already done the course can re-join to continue building upon their previous work with tutored guidance.

Stone Carving – SOLD OUT

Primarily this is a practical course. You will gain a structured understanding of stone as a material, basic carving techniques and ways of being creative with this wonderful medium. All of these aspects will come together in the creation of a finished piece of work. You will make sketches of what you would like to carve (plan view, front view and section) to help with understanding the form, before modelling it in clay and then quickly move into carving.

Please note that there is an additional fee for initial purchase of stone, varying depending on the type of stone you wish to use. Art Academy staff are able to advise ahead of booking.

Introduction to Sculpture – SOLD OUT

An ideal start point for those wishing to explore sculpture, this course covers both foundation technical skills and a creative exploration of different materials and ways of working. Sculpture is wonderfully fun and creative and with some simple skills taught great results can be achieved.
The first half of term comprises three weeks of figurative sculpture in clay with a life model and two weeks of portraiture with another life model, also in clay. The second half of term is an introduction to plaster, wire and other materials culminating in a personal project. Students leave the course with a strong foundation of sculpture skills as well as an individual approach to the practice.

If you are interested in learning to sculpt the human figure then this is an ideal class for you. You can have the opportunity to explore both the full figure and a portrait head sculpture with a different model for each. You will model in clay for 10 weeks: 5 weeks figure sculpture from a set pose and 5 weeks portrait head sculpture.
You will get a flavour of the challenges of both of these disciplines. Many come back term after term to deepen their understanding – beginners are welcome. As well as the practical use of clay, observational skills and firing preparation are also covered.

With the help of a very experienced and skilled tutor, you will explore a variety of materials and techniques in order to develop design techniques leading to a practical approach in jewellery making and metalwork, learning how to form, solder, join and texture metal. You will also have the opportunity to combine materials, such as stones, resins, various metals and other mixed media in order to make some very creative jewellery..
For all levels – beginners intermediate and advanced – enabling those with some previous experience to extend their skills.
