A structured and systematic course for those who have never painted before and for those who want to reinforce their basic oil skills or to move on to using oil paints having used acrylics or water-based media. Students learn to see colour, shape and tone, and to relate these elements together in compositions with access to a life model. This course aims to foster self-confidence and enjoyment of painting in a stimulating community environment. Classes take place in a studio and if weather permits some outdoor painting will be done. As an ideal course for beginners there is plenty of guidance from the tutor in a fun and relaxing environment.

Exploring textures and mark making that are enjoyable and satisfying to look at. This is a great ‘taster’ course and an excellent opportunity to develop skills as well as creativity with your own ideas.
During the course students will explore basic drawing skills as well as more expressive painting and sculpture. The course will also give you a change to paint and sculpt the human figure, before finishing with a taster of printmaking. It is great fun and by the end students will have a learnt a whole range of different skills.

Painting the Human Figure is a ten-week comprehensive life-painting course that leads to an understanding of the three main components that make up figure painting – light, colour and shape. The course explores the problems students often find in figure painting, namely the art of colour mixing, as well as the difficulties of drawing the figure in paint. By the end of the course students are expected to have a good basic understanding of colour mixing and of the function of light (tone) and the method of capturing the character of the model. The course is designed for both beginners and the more experienced.
