Our deputy-head of painting Sue Spaull‘s striking painting of Glenda Jackson can be seen dotted around London at the moment. Sue was was commissioned by the Old Vic theatre to paint a portrait of Glenda Jackson to promote and commemorate her historic performance as King Lear – her first return to theatre after 25 years. The show itself has had rave reviews and is in its final days of performance. But the posters for the show can be seen on the London underground, as well as outside the Old Vic theatre.
Alumnus of our Fine Art Diploma, Sue was approached having previously painted Glenda for her solo exhibition ‘What are you looking at?’, at the Strand Gallery, London, where the portrait was hung against a painted wallpaper of naked women inviting the viewer to explore and question the use of the female body.
